Yay semester is over! It goes by way too fast, my brain is seriously stuck somewhere in November and half the time I don't know what day it is, so I'm excited for a nice 2-week break and drawing lots in my sketchbook with my new found skills. This is one of the images from my character design team package; I was in charge of a kind of superhero Napoleon. It was a great sandbox type of assignment- laborious, but I really got into the inking and coloring aspect and learned so much in the process.

weekend sketchbook
Oh man, I missed my sketchbook sooo much, it was like saying hello to an old friend. This weekend was fairly light in terms of schoolwork so I dived back in and it was cool water for my brain. Something about color and rhythm and pattern and visual elements make me really happy. I need to take more time when I'm busy to give my sketchbook some love and nourish it, I feel like I get dry if all I'm doing is learning without really outputing or making it my own. The one thing that really stuck with me from reading Vilppu's drawing manual is that impression without expression is depression; I need to let myself play more often and be curious, it's so important. Last week was super hectic so this was a great way to relax for what lies ahead. I can't believe it's already been 2 months, and a half? It goes by incredibly fast, and I can definitely see how much I've improved but I'm also very impatient and see myself in a place I'm not currently at which can be a little frustrating and motivating because I so desperately want to get better.
Some studies from Cartoon Modern. I love the the 60's for having so many exciting visual ideas going on in their images, there's something about it that I really gravitate to, the stylization. It's the same thing I find exciting about good graphic designers during that time like A.M. Cassandre, Paul Rand, and Saul Bass.
This time I was listening to My Bloody Valentine, I don't even really know what they look like, and I can't really tell what they're saying half the time, (which is great for background music) but there's a sort of ennui or yearning for something.

All done!
This was a lot of work but a lot fun. There were a couple moments of frustration and not knowing what to do, but I somehow managed to get through it and learned a lot in the process. I definitely plan on doing more in the summertime when I have the chance.

Sooo bussssyyy ;______________;
School has been taking up all my time, it's like being in a completely different world, but I love the work and my classmates are awesomlarious. I barely have time to see what people are doing on facebook, or reading my art blawgs, everything unrelated kinda fades into the background as I've been completely absorbed by this work. It's an odd disjointed feeling watching people casually walk down the street on a gorgeous sunny day as I wait for my bus. My life has been reduced to eating sleeping and drawing, but it feels so good being challenged! I've improved so much over these past couple of weeks, the only thing I miss right now is playing with my watercolours.

Humble beginnings
Hi, I'm Shanna. I'm currently a first year student at Capilano U in the 2D animation program. I enjoy being challenged and am excited by what this program will offer me. It is my hope that by starting this blog I will be posting some of the small victories along the way to becoming a better animator. Thanks for looking!
